Steam Store Not Loading: Best Fixes

Multiple factors can prevent the Steam Store page from loading properly. You could be having a glitched process, cache corruption, or even a faulty client application/update.

Generally, you can force terminate the bad process or even clear out cache files to resolve this issue. But considering the nature of this problem, you might need to try other fixes as well.

Taking all the factors into consideration, I’ve listed multiple fixes that will restore the Steam store page. 

Close the Steam Client Webhelper Process

The Steam Client Webhelper process is partially responsible for loading the components of the Steam Store page. Any issues with this process can lead to a blank store page.

You can resolve problematic processes like these by force-closing them from the Task Manager. 

1. Press the Windows + Shift + Esc shortcut keys to open the Task Manager.
2. Locate and right-click on the Steam Client Webhelper process.
3. Click on End Task. This will also reboot the Steam client automatically.

Clear Cache Files

While Cache files do improve loading times and browsing experience in Steam, they are also notorious for creating numerous problems, like cache corruption/incompatibility. 

This problem usually occurs when the updated version of Steam relies on the outdated local cache file. Cache corruption can affect Steam’s features and functionality like the game library page, store page, community hub page, etc

A good fix for this issue is to get rid of all the old cache files from your computer. Here, we’ll be clearing out the Download Cache as well as the Browser Cache.

1. Launch the Steam client application.
2. Click on Steam on the menu bar and select Settings.
3. Switch to the Downloads tab and hit the Clear Cache button.
4. Click on Confirm to clear the cache files. You will need to re-login into your Steam account.
5. Next, open the In-Game option and click the Delete button under Delete Web Browser Data.
6. Hit the Confirm button to close the prompt.

Disable CEF Sandbox

Steam relies on the isolated Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF) sandbox for its integrated web browser and other similar processes. Rarely, issues with the sandbox can break the store page. 

So, you can try disabling the CEF sandbox itself and see whether it solves the problem. You can do this by adding a flag on the Steam shortcut’s Target text field.

You will usually get a shortcut file on your desktop after installing Steam, but if you dont have a shortcut file, follow the steps below.

1. Open the Steam installation directory. By default, you’ll find it under “C:Program Files (x86)Steam”.
2. Right-click on Steam, hover on Send to, and select Desktop (create shortcut).
3. Switch to your Desktop and right-click on the Steam shortcut file.
4. Open Properties. Windows 11 users may have to open the expanded menu first by clicking on Show more options.
5. Type -no-cef-sandbox at the end of the Target text field. The target field should look like this.
   C:Program Files (x86)SteamSteam.exe" -no-cef-sandbox
6. Click on Apply and OK to save the changes.
7. Now, run Steam from the shortcut file.

Run Steam Big Picture Mode

If you cannot use the store page in normal mode, you can also try accessing it in Big Picture mode. The Big Picture mode loads an entirely different interface but with the same functionalities suited more for couch gaming.

1. Lauch the Steam application.
2. Click View on the menu bar and select Big Picture mode.
3. Click the Steam Menu and select the Store.

Disable Compatibility Mode

Running Steam in Compatibility mode can cause conflict with steamwebhelper.exe, the same process that is responsible for loading the UI elements on the Steam store page. 

So, make sure to disable the compatibility option for Steam if it’s enabled. Follow the steps to see how.

1. Navigate to “C:Program Files (x86)Steam” or the Steam installation directory.
2. Right-click on Steam.exe and select Properties.
3. Switch to the Compatibility tab and uncheck the Run this program in compatibility mode for checkbox.
4. Hit Apply and then OK to save changes.

Check Your Internet Connection

Steam needs a stable internet connection to fetch data from its server. Without a proper connection, you’ll likely suffer from a blank store page or a page with several broken UI elements.

So, test your internet connection for issues using the ping command. Follow the steps below.

1. Open the Run command and enter CMD.
2. Type ping store.steampowered.comand press Enter.
3. If you’re getting replies from the server, then it means there is a good connection. If you’re getting a Request timed out error or No Reply, then it means there are problems with the connection.

Note: Steam can also fail to fetch information if your internet connection is poor with frequent fluctuations. So, make sure that you have a decent internet speed. You can test your connection speed from sites like Speedtest or Fast.

Use Alternate DNS Servers

Having problematic DNS servers can create communication issues between the Steam client application and Steam’s servers. 

A quick fix for this issue is to flush the old DNS cache and then assign new DNS servers.

First, let’s look at how to flush the DNS cache.

1. Open the Run command and type in CMD.
2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to launch the Command Prompt as administrator. Click Yes on the User Account Control prompt.
3. Type in ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter to run the command.

After clearing the DNS cache, we can assign new DNS servers.

1. Enter ncpal.cpl on the Run command.
2. Right-click on your internet connection and select Properties.
3. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click the Properties button.
4. Click the Use the following DNS server addresses option and enter the following addresses.
   • Preferred DNS server 8.8.8.8 
   • Alternate DNS server 8.8.4.4
5. Hit the OK button and then close the window.

Disable Third-Party Firewall

Third-party antivirus software often replaces the default Windows Firewall with its own Firewall system. This can sometimes falsely terminate and block Steam’s connection, leading to broken store pages.

So, you must check the antivirus’s firewall system and allow Steam to communicate with its servers. If you’re unsure about the firewall being the culprit, you can turn off the antivirus software temporarily and then check Steam’s store page.

Update Steam

Sometimes, a broken update or a bug in your system can glitch out the Steam client application, making it impossible to load the store page. Steam is quick to address such widespread issues, and they often deploy the fixes in the form of updates.

While the client application does update itself automatically, you can still perform a manual update just to be sure. To do so, follow the steps below.

1. Launch Steam and click the Steam option on the menu bar.
2. Click on Select the Check for Steam Client Updates. Steam will look for the latest update and install it automatically.

Re-install Steam

If updating the client application does not fix the issue, you can remove the faulty application from your computer entirely and then install a fresh version. 

1. Enter appwiz.cpl on the Run Command to open the Programs and Feature menu.
2. Right-click on Steam and hit Uninstall to run the uninstallation wizard.
3. Afterward, head over to Steam’s webpage and download/install a fresh copy of the application. 

Check the Steam’s Server

Sometimes, the issue of the broken store page may not entirely be on your end but instead could be because of offline servers. Steam periodically takes down its servers for timely maintenance and upgrades.
